Mindfulness-Based Therapy encompasses several evidence-based practices including Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and mindfulness as integrated into DBT, ACT, and other modern therapies. Rooted in Buddhist meditation tradition and adapted for clinical use by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness is now a core skill in most comprehensive behavioral health programs.

From Our Clinical Director

Mindfulness sounds simple, and that's why people underestimate it. The ability to notice a thought or an urge without immediately acting on it — that gap between stimulus and response — is where recovery lives. When clients learn to sit with discomfort rather than flee from it, everything changes. It's not about emptying your mind; it's about changing your relationship with it.

Who Is This Therapy For?

The Scenario

A client's anxiety spikes the moment they wake — a tidal wave of 'what ifs' that drives them to reach for a drink or a pill before they've even gotten out of bed. The thoughts feel like commands, not choices.

The Speranza Approach

Through mindfulness practice, they learn to notice the anxious thought arise, label it as a thought rather than a fact, and observe it without immediately obeying it. The urge to use doesn't disappear — but they discover they can ride it out. That pause, sometimes just 90 seconds, becomes the space where a different choice becomes possible.

How Mindfulness-Based Therapy Works

1

Mindfulness practice begins with training attention — learning to intentionally direct awareness to the present moment rather than being swept away by rumination about the past or worry about the future. This is practiced formally (sitting meditation, body scan) and informally (mindful eating, walking, breathing).

2

For clients with anxiety, mindfulness interrupts the cycle of anxious anticipation and avoidance. By learning to observe anxious thoughts as mental events rather than facts, clients develop a more spacious, less reactive relationship with their internal experience.

3

For addiction recovery, mindfulness is particularly powerful for urge surfing — the practice of riding out cravings by observing them with curiosity rather than immediately acting on them. Research shows that mindfulness training significantly reduces craving intensity and relapse rates.

4

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) specifically targets depressive relapse, teaching clients to recognize the early cognitive signs of a depressive episode and respond skillfully rather than getting pulled into a downward spiral. It has been shown to reduce depression relapse by up to 44% in individuals with recurrent depression.
